In a recent insightful webinar, Emma Ross, co-founder of Seas the Mind, delved into the crucial topic of holistic health and how it applies to superyacht crew. Emma’s message resonated with captains, team leaders, and crew alike, as she outlined how vital it is to maintain not just physical health but also mental, financial, social, and digital wellbeing. She highlighted the interconnectedness of these aspects and how neglecting one can lead to an imbalance in the others, ultimately affecting performance and overall happiness.

Emma underscored the profound effects of regular exercise on mental health, and explained that activities like jogging or strength training help release endorphins, improve sleep quality, and reduce stress and anxiety – all essential for captains and crew members during busy charter seasons. Aerobic activities and strength training do more than just keep the body in shape; they create a positive ripple effect on mental clarity and productivity. Small Changes, Big Impact
The key takeaway from the session was Emma’s advice to start small when building exercise routines. Her message was clear: Incorporating even just a few minutes of movement into the day, for example 3 minutes of planks or wall sits, taking deep mindful breaths or doing a series of stretches, can make a massive difference. The importance of weaving these habits into daily routines, even during hectic periods, ensures everyone on board stays resilient and grounded.
Emma encouraged yacht crews to organise team-based activities, whether it’s a weekly sports team in shipyards or scheduling runs and bike rides. These activities not only contribute to physical health but also foster social wellbeing, creating a shared sense of purpose and camaraderie onboard.
By embracing a holistic approach to health, crew members can navigate the challenges of their demanding roles more effectively, ensuring they’re not only physically fit but mentally strong, socially connected, and emotionally balanced.
SEAS THE MIND is dedicated to creating mentally healthy and resilient crew and seafarers through Mental Health First Aid training.
